Some of my favorites haunts in Austin are on South Congress. If you are at SXSW, just walk across the bridge …

Outsider art gallery
Yard Dog Gallery opened in 1995, with its roots steeped in folk and outsider art from North America, especially the Deep South. They also show art by many contemporary artists who work in a folky, funky vernacular.

Cool store, Antiques, Oddities
Described as “your eccentric uncle’s attic on steroids.” It began 1991 as a small antique collective, now has twenty antique sellers assembled under one roof to bring a very genuine and sometimes quirky slice of American culture and history. And remember, this is no museum. This stuff is for sale.

Food truck
Sitting on the corner of a food truck mecca on South Congress, The Mighty Cone is hopping. Nope, it’s not ice cream. It’s sesame seed, arbol chili fakes, sea salt, sugar and cornflakes encrusted on chicken, avocado or shrimp, wrapped in a tortilla and served up in a paper cone.
