Oh yeah, it’s the World’s Largest Ball of Twine

World’s Largest Ball of Twine

Highway 24
Cawker City, KS

Cawker City’s claim to fame started when a man named Frank Stoeber was tired of all those loose strands getting in his way – so he did something about it. He started winding and never looked back. That was in the ’50s. And in the ’80s, when some other towns (like Darwin, Minnesota) started making claims about their Big Balls, the city responded by starting an annual Twine-a-thon to keep the record at home. It worked. Now others have to add a disclaimer, like “biggest made by one man.” Ha!

The “Twine-a-thon” is held on the 3rd Friday each August, with a picnic and parade held the following day.
