Historic lighting at Zilker Park

Matthew McConaughey spread the word “Party at the moon tower” in the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused. Today they are an official Texas landmark and some can be found near Zilker Park. A popular lighting option in the late 19th century, Austin erected these towers in response to an unknown serial killer known as the “Servant Girl Annihilator.

This is one of 17 of the 31 that remain. Now mercury vapor lamps provide beacons for many miles on roads and airway, from dusk to dawn. Austin is the only city left using in this dramatic method of lighting.
