Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket
645 Joliet Road
Great road food (as seen on TV), Chicken dinner, American
Fried chicken has been being served here since the 1930s. The restaurant was an ideal stopping place for Route 66 travelers coming from or going to Chicago. The location also made the Chicken Basket an obvious choice to become a Blue Bird bus stop, bringing in even more folks.
After 66 was rerouted past the Chicken Basket in the early 60’s, it fell on hard times. People who remembered the restaurant couldn’t figure out how to get to it and it almost went out of business. Luckily in 1963, Dell Rhea and his wife Grace bought the restaurant at a bargain price, Dell being very well known in the area used his reputation to help bring people back to the Chicken Basket. They are strong Route 66 supporters.
This Route 66 classic was featured on “Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.”
