A big shiny bean …

Millennium Park

Despite the cold, damp, windy day that is typical of a Chicago winter, Millenium Park was the happening place to be. Ice skating and gawking at the amazing public art seems to defy any meteorological difficulties.

This public park inside of the Loop was created to celebrate the millennium, although it ended up being about four years behind schedule. After much prodding, renowned architect, Frank Geary designed the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a bandshell with seating for 4,000.

Anish Kapoor created the three-story steel sculpture, “Cloud Gate,” affectionately dubbed “The Bean.” The undulating mirror-like finish makes it a great place for photo ops.

Also in the park is the Crown Fountain, designed by Catalan conceptual artist, Jaume Plensa that features a black granite fountain between two fifty-foot glass brick towers that display constantly changing digital images of almost 1,000 Chicagoans.
